In the years 1950 to 1955, the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis took America by storm. Everything they touched seemed to become golden: hit films, a top-rated Sunday night television show and sold-out live performances in theatres nationwide.
Many of their greatest skits from "The Comedy Hour" are highlighted in the second installment of "Martin & Lewis: Their Golden Age of Comedy." In this chapter, Jerry Lewis recalls how amazed he was at the magic he and Dean created. "It was as though twins were born, separated at birth and found one another, twenty-five years later."
The last great comedy team to emerge from the influences of vaudeville, Martin and Lewis managed to bridge the gap from live theatre performances to television. They were fresh and unpredictable, constantly breaking character, doing whatever they thought would get a laugh.
In this program, Jerry Lewis discusses many of the famous skits and variations on the skits from the television show. There is "the suitcase on the bed" gag, where he pulls all kinds of things out of a suitcase, including people. From many of their skits, national catchphases also grew. A montage features the best of these including "Melvin?," "Don't lick it" and "I like it, I like it."
For ten years Martin and Lewis ruled the world and left behind a lifetime of laughs. In 1956, the comedy team made their final performance.
Jerry Lewis is joined by special guest star Martin Short who talks about the Martin and Lewis influence in his comedy.
