A not-so-funny thing happens to talk show host Jerry Langford on his way to the studio one morning--he is kidnapped by an aspiring stand-up comic. The ransom: an appearance on Langford's show to perform his routine. Robert De Niro stars as the obsessive comic, Rupert Pupkin, and Jerry Lewis, as Langford, co-stars in a rare dramatic performance in this compelling film by director Martin Scorsese. Pupkin, whose only audience has been a tape recorder and large cardboard cutouts of his idols, is already a legend in his own mind and will risk everything to get a break on Langford's late night talk show. Unable to land an appearance on Langford's show, Pupkin joins in a bizarre scheme to kidnap the talk-show host with a wacky, romantically obsessed Langford fan (Sandra Bernhard). The results are incredibly funny and ironically true-to-life.
